Editor’s Note: We recently unveiled Ask Oregon, a program that allows travelers to ask “Oregon Experts” about traveling throughout the state. We’d like to introduce you to our experts and will be featuring them periodically here on the Travel Oregon Blog. This week, we’d like to introduce you to our Greater Portland Ambassador, Dave Knows!

What’s your favorite thing about living in Oregon?

With the ocean beaches, river gorges, lush valleys, awesome forests, snow capped mountains, and high desert – Oregon is beautiful in all directions. And it’s also all accessible. Add that to Portland’s charms, which include exceptional restaurants, abundant cafes, and ubiquitous brewpubs, and I can’t think of any other place I’d rather live.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy Oregon?

From Portland, a huge variety of Oregon’s natural beauty is only an hour or two away. My wife and I explore new places on frequent day trips to the coast, or the mountains, or wine country, or the Gorge. We usually top off our trips with a stop at a nearby brewpub.

What’s the one tip you always give to visitors?

Go to a Portland Timbers match – it’s an unforgettable experience! And if at all possible, make sure to spend a day at one of the local festivals (cultural, seasonal, culinary, beer-related, etc.) that take place throughout the year. There are plenty of quirky and out-of-the-way sites to see in Portland if you are feeling adventurous. And of course you’ve heard of it, but be sure to visit Powell’s Books. It really is as amazing as they say.

Describe your perfect Oregon Vacation…

My perfect Oregon vacation happens every summer when my wife and I go on weekend camping trips or week-long tours across the state. Most of our journeys involve a picturesque drive through deserts, mountains, along a river or the coast, and then a stop in one of our favorite towns: Astoria, Bend, Joseph, Hood River. When we camp, we bring a dutch oven and challenge ourselves to come up with elaborate meals that astonish friends. As we sit by the campfire, we are endlessly thankful to live in such a gorgeous part of the country.

Rhiannon is a native Oregonian who grew up exploring the nooks and crannies of the Oregon Coast and daydreaming in Powell’s City of Books. She now lives in NE Portland with her husband and her new baby boy and looks forward to teaching him to love Oregon as much as she does. Rhiannon attended both the University of Oregon and Portland State University, where she studied Journalism and Mass Media. She claims to ‘bleed green’ and happily cheers for both the Ducks and the Vikings every chance she gets. In her free time, Rhiannon enjoys sipping Oregon Pinot, finding new restaurants, bargain hunting and trying new recipes – sometimes successfully. She has a child-like enthusiasm for trying new things and rediscovering old ones – such as skee-ball, mini golf, and big slides.
