Oregon Is Better Than OK!
March 14, 2008
If you're one of our regular readers, you know that WE LOVE Live Wire! - the quirky but scintillating radio variety show on OPB. We already knew that the crew of Live Wire! were super talented performers...but "music archaeologists"? Who knew!
They've apparently recently discovered that Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, Oklahoma, was originally, going to be about Oregon. The story goes that at the last minute Oregon withdrew financial backing in favor of building a dam or a fish ladder or something, and Oklahoma was a hasty and awkward substitute. Here's proof!
~Happy Friday!
ps: if you're curious about the lyrics, you can read them here on the Live Wire! blog
Editor's Note: Celebrate the four year anniversary of Live Wire! this weekend at the Aladdin Theater in Portland - see the details here

Old McDonald Had Some Chefs, E-i-e-i-o
September 24, 2007
If music be the food of love, play on! If you've been surfing the Travel Oregon site or perhaps any major travel or food site over the past few weeks, you might have noticed our offbeat ads for Oregon Bounty promoted via the "musical banners" representing the Oregon Bounty Music Department (see sample below).
We've taken some old classics (remember “Old McDonald” or "99 bottles"?) and given them a modern-day, Oregon spin--all in the name of Oregon Bounty. Check out our music department, download the tunes as ring tones or just send us some of your own lyrics!
Jim from Seattle sent us these lyrics this morning...sing to the tune of foodies rejoice (click on the banner to play the music)
Come on out to our fair,
It's more fun when your there,
Breathe some Oregon air...
Yea were willing to share,
Go on rides where you spin in a chair or could win a big ol teddy bear, It's all in Oregon.
Travel Oregon dot com,
It's part of my song,
No it's not all that long...
But the message is strong,
No you cant go wrong when you visit Travel Oregon dot com, Do do doot do do do.
Send us your verses....and you might get your very own Travel Oregon t-shirt! (Jim's getting one!)
Rose Festival Named Best in the World!
September 21, 2007
We're excited to wake up this morning and hear that the Portland Rose Festival was declared "Best in the World" by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA). The festival took the most awards in its history, with 30 total accolades for separate events, programs and features including the coveted Grand Pinnacle Award.
This iconic Portland celebration takes over Waterfront Park for 18 days each day in June and recently celebrated its 100th year! The festival entices people from all over the world with such attractions as carnival rides, dragon boat races, queen's coronation, starlight parade and the Grand Floral Parade, one of the nation's top two all-floral parades. The Kentucky Derby Festival in Louisville, Kentucky took the next highest honor.
~Cheers to the Rose Festival from the Travel Oregon crew!

Tell Matt Where to Go in Oregon
August 3, 2007

A “road trip” is most definitely the quintessential American travel experience. From wandering through idyllic scenic byways to dining on local cuisine and taking in quirky roadside attractions (humanoid rabbit, for example), the memories of a bygone road trip are fondly etched into our memories.
We’ve been following the adventures of Matt Gross, a reporter of the New York Times who has been trekking through the country on a journey from New York City to Seattle on a mission to “make new friends,” and stumble onto “new vistas and obscure cuisines” along the way. Next week, Matt will trek through Oregon and would love to know what roadside attractions, unique events and interesting places he should visit. Please visit his road trip site and tell him where you think he should go.

The Scoop on Cannon Beach and Seaside…
June 3, 2007
Seaside and Cannon Beach are two of the most popular North Coast destinations in Oregon. The Lewis and Clark trail ended at what is now Seaside, a resort town famous for its promenade. A few miles south is Cannon Beach, a charming community known for its art galleries, tide pools and sunsets behind Haystack Rock. If you’re planning a trip out to either Seaside or Cannon Beach this summer, be sure to read the following blogs by Terry Richard of OregonLive.com. (Photo above: Travel Oregon's Holly with her son at Ecola State Park)
Terry has been blogging from Seaside and Cannon Beach for the last week and has the scoop on a variety of fun topics such as: Ecola State Park, The North Coast Land Conservancy, Cannon Beach’s arts scene, the one-of-a-kind Seaside Promenade, Seaside Aquarium, family fun in Seaside and where to eat and where to stay in both towns.

Oregon Summer Travel Update
May 25, 2007
Summer travel update from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT)
Oregon's two major interstates (I-5 & I-84) connect our largest cities to each other and our neighboring states. But despite the diverse and dramatic scenery that's revealed along each one, you simply can't appreciate Oregon from the fast lane of the freeway. So take a few hours (or a few days) and explore some of our roads less traveled. They can escort you along a rollicking river or a rugged coastline. They can guide you to the base of a majestic peak or the edge of a massive canyon. Granted, these routes may not offer the fastest ways to get around Oregon. Whichever one you happen to be on, however, you're sure to get quite a rush.
But before you travel Oregon this summer…check out www.TripCheck.com or call 511 (in Oregon) for the latest road and weather conditions and do drive carefully. Our friends at ODOT are working hard this summer to make our highways and bridges safer and you may encounter traffic restrictions, lane closures, detours, and delays. Check out construction maps before you go and use caution when driving through work zones.
Safe travels!

Did You GoSeeOregon?
April 27, 2007
Did you GoSeeOregon yet? As we told you six weeks ago, Travel Oregon is supporting a one-of-a-kind project that adds “social networking” to the Oregon tourism experience. The website, GoSeeOregon.com, was built by Oregon-based GoSeeTell Network Inc. and allows travelers to share information, tips and recommendations about places to go and things to do across the state.
Of course you might ask why there is a need for another travel website about Oregon. The answer to this is very simple: GoSeeOregon.com is not about Oregon - it is about the people who travel in Oregon.
It is about the hikers, bikers, rafters, skiers, honeymooners, wine-tasters, beachcombers, Paulina-plunge-takers, fly-fisher(wo)men, theater-lovers, sand-boarders, beer-drinkers, campers, horseback-riders, rock-climbers, berry-pickers and all the others travel in Oregon to have a good time.
In a nutshell: GoSeeOregon.com is a website about you and we want to hear from you. We want to know where you like to go and what you like to do. What are your favorite restaurants, B&Bs, attractions and activities?

Inside Scoop – Behind the Making of 365 Extraordinary Days in Oregon
April 10, 2007
What does it take to build a visual mosaic of 365 Extraordinary Days in Oregon?
Coffee, sugar, lost sleep and an army of dedicated and enthusiastic staff, partners and vendors!
The Travel Oregon (TO) office has been buzzing with excitement over the past month-and-a-half as we got ready to take “365” live on April 1. Our “east” conference room in Salem was transformed into a campaign style war room—stacks of event listings were strewn over the floors, the walls were adorned with design “comps,” and a full-time temp hammered away on a Mac and a PC (ok, not simultaneously) trying to get the events identified by the campaign into our web database.
And all across the state, our partners scurried to get us lists of ideas for events and things to do. Meanwhile in Portland, teams at Wieden+Kennedy (lead/ad agency), opus:creative (web agency), and eROI (e-marketing agency) were diligently working away on the vital components of what’s since been called “one of the best client/agency collaborations I have ever worked on” by Ken Smith, our Account Director at Wieden+Kennedy.
Welcome to 365 Extraordinary Days in Oregon!

Spring Has Sprung - Wherefore Art Thou?
April 2, 2007

So, how about with an arts getaway to Bend?! One of you will win a fabulous vacation to this booming Central Oregon town to attend the BendFilm Festival in October. And what's more, we've got a savory white truffle risotto recipe from Chef Jeff Park of The Campbell House in Eugene.
See you in Oregon, where the sun is shining and we've got spring in our step.

365 Extraordinary Days in Oregon
April 1, 2007

"There’s always something to do Oregon!" I can't tell you how many times I’ve said this to my friends and family. The truth of the matter is the fact that Oregon is a zany and wonderful place where one could never get bored. Whether you’re eating yummy Szechuan noodle dishes at a mysterious underground restaurant in Old Town Portland or partaking in annual Mosquito Festival in Paisley (Eastern Oregon), there never is a dull moment in Oregon.
I am excited and honored to announce that today (Sunday, April 1 - this is no joke!), we launched our first ever digital media campaign; it’s called 365 Extraordinary Days in Oregon and highlights a year’s worth of things see and do in Oregon. From the Eighth Annual UFO Festival to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, we wanted to give you a daily glimpse of what's going on in a state where things are not business as usual.

Old Town Portland - A Filmmakers Take
January 26, 2007

One of my favorite places in Portland is its funky Old Town (Chinatown). It's home to a bustling arts and entertainment district and filled with eclectic characters, hip nightspots, good eats and one-of-a-kind attractions such as Portland Saturday Market, the Chinese Gardens and Voodoo Doughnut . My wife and I wandered into this neighborhood by mistake on our first day in the city (we got off at the wrong MAX stop) and after just a few minutes wandering the streets, we were completely ethralled by the spirit of Old Town.
What really adds character to old town however is its mysterious and not-so savory past. Watch this short movie by Dicky Dahl (a Portland based writer, filmmaker and former front man for Stratotanker) to experience Old Town Portland for yourself. ~ Happy Friday! - Mo
