Exciting Outdoor Adventures in Hood River

The Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge is an excellent location for outdoor adventures, even if you don't quite think you're outdoorsy! From biking to hiking and dune buggy rides, there is an activity for all ages, all skill levels and for those who simply appreciate great scenery.

CNN's Beth J. Harpaz recently traveled to Hood River with her husband and two sons, and they visited Multnomah Falls, the Mosier Twin Tunnels, Mt. Hood Adventure Park and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. She said, "Yes, our family is more comfortable on city streets and subways than in the great outdoors. But our Oregon adventures were a blast. Next time, I might even try windsurfing, which Hood River is famous for." To read all about the Harpaz family's Oregon adventure, please click here for the full article.

Summer is right around the corner, so now is the perfect time to plan a trip to the Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge region. Give windsurfing a try, fish or raft the beautiful waterways, or visit a local event. The possibilities are endless!

Celebrating the Quirky Side of Portland

If you love Portland, it's most likely because of its unique and slightly off-kilter style. If you've ever visited the Velveteria or Voodoo Doughnut, you know that Portland truly does have something to offer everyone. CNN recently described Portland as "one of the nation's more livable cities, listed among the best places to have a baby, grow old, go for a walk, ride a bike, take a jog, breathe clean air, own a dog, take public transportation, start a business (green or otherwise), go out for dinner or not get mugged."

CNN's recent article entitled "Exploring Portland's far side" also listed some of Portland's known nicknames, including Beervana, the Rose City, and Sin City. Please click <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/05/05/portland.farside.ap/index.html"target="new">here to read the full article.

Hiking Silver Falls State Park

By Ashley Moran

Now that the sun has finally begun to poke through the clouds, the weather is just about perfect for an afternoon hike. And I've found that even if the weather is unpredictable, Silver Falls is still worth the trip.

I hadn't been back to Silver Falls for a number of years, but I had many fond memories of family bbq's and hikes with my cousins in the summer time. I also remember traveling through a number of scenic byways as a child- yet I seem to appreciate Oregon's beauty much more now that I am an adult! If you have some extra time during your hiking excursion, check out the Silver Falls Tour Route. You will encounter even more gorgeous scenery.

Yes, you can get a burger at the new Deschutes Brewery & Public House in the Pearl District -- a burger with house-made pickles, a roll fresh from their bakery and, soon enough, beef from cows fed on the brewery's spent grain.

"As a brewpub, we'll exceed people's expectations," said chef Jeff Usinowicz. "We'll definitely be a brewpub, but we'll also be a great restaurant -- the kind of place where, if you don't feel like getting dressed up for Bluehour, you can drop by as you are for some great food and great beer." >>Full Story on OregonLive.com

Oregon Halibut Season Starts Tomorrow!

If you've got a hankering for a delicious halibut dinner, you're in luck! The Pacific halibut season opens May 1 on the Oregon Coast.

Matt Blume caught a halibut last year (picture above) and stated, "It felt like I hooked the bumper of a Buick on its way to the bottom of the ocean.” It turns out that his halibut weighed a whopping 106 pounds. “It was the hardest-fighting heavy fish I’ve ever caught. It took two of us five tries to get it into the boat,” he added.

2007 was an excellent year for halibut anglers, with a record of over 16,500 fish caught. This year isn't looking too shabby either, as the International Pacific Halibut Commission has set a quota of over 250,000 pounds of halibut for Oregon.

So get out there and start fishing! And if you're able to catch a halibut, try our exquisite Hazelnut Crusted Halibut recipe with Marionberry Margarita Sauce. For more details on halibut fishing in Oregon, please visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Rockin' Out at Portland's Crystal Ballroom

By Ashley Moran

This past week, I had the opportunity to check out one of the Crystal Ballroom's alternative concerts, put on by <a href="http://947.fm/Homepage/137020"target="new">94.7 fm's Passport Approved program. The concert featured Skybombers, Justin Hopkins and Bassboosa. The Passport Approved program runs on Sunday evenings and features artists from areas around the world. For example, Skybombers are from Australia, and Bassboosa is from London.

If you've never been to the Crystal Ballroom, be sure to check it out!
Have A Blast At The Oregon Shakespeare Festival!

"I have had a dream, past the wit of man to say what dream it was." ~William Shakespeare

This past winter, the Travel Oregon staff had the opportunity to see four plays during opening weekend of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I have been to the festival two times before, and I have to say it gets better each year! This year, we saw "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Fences", "The Clay Cart" and "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter".

The snow was just starting to melt when we entered into Ashland, and the town had a very crisp, wintery feel about it. We even lucked out and had clear weather the entire trip, which made walking through downtown and Lithia Park even more enjoyable. And the food! I can't even describe how delicious Ashland's restaurants are- if you don't go anywhere else, you at least have to try <a href="http://www.pastapiatti.com/"target="new">Pasta Piatti (it's in an adorable red building- you can't miss it). Try their squash ravioli- it has biscotti pieces and a brown-butter sage sauce on top. It literally melts in your mouth.

Hidden away in the southeastern corner of Oregon is a little known natural wonder. A place where golden eagles soar alongside massive cliffs tinged pink and red with the rising sun. Where Indian paintbrush and desert primrose provide a colorful contrast to the stark landscape. Where a long-deserted pioneer home stands lonely and neglected, defying the harsh elements – a testament to the hardy folk who carved out a life here. Where the deep quiet provides the perfect atmosphere for pondering the meaning of ancient petroglyphs carved in the living rock. These are the canyons of the Owyhee River – Oregon’s Grand Canyon.

Hatfield Marine Science Center's Octopus Conquers A New Frontier

Last week, Jimmie the Octopus ventured out into the wild after leaving her home at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Jimmie loved her home at the Marine Science Center, and enjoyed interacting with people. Because of this, she was reluctant to leave her cozy tank in Newport. After a little bit of coaxing with the help of a delicious crab, Jimmie ventured into the wild at the Yaquina Bay jetty, while onlookers cheered for her. Apparently Jimmie loved living in Oregon as much as we do!
