As small towns go...Prairie City, Oregon has a variety of museums, restaurants and shops to experience. The Historic Hotel Prairie is on main street and there are many area Bed and Breakfasts that I have heard great things about as well..two are on working ranches. The rich history in the area is chronicled in the Depot Park Museum and includes railroad, mining, ranching. We are near John Day where there are additional museums to visit including the Kam Wa Chung Museum and the Ranch and Rodeo Museum. There are beautiful hiking, biking trails....wilderness areas....high mountain lakes,....or just small town peace.

Coburg just, outside Eugene, is one of my favorite small-own outings. Some of the best antigue shops in all of Oregon are to be found in Coburg, lunch at the vintage Coburg cafe, pleasant strolling around town with beatuiful sceninc farmland on the outskirts, Corburg is a wonderful place to be!

Other hidden gems near Sandmaster Park (Florence) include Darlingtonia Wayside, home of carnivorous pitcher plants. It's a short walk on a shaded boardwalk. Head up to Washburne State Park and hike on the Valley Trail. You'll go along China Creek to an old homestead site. Keep on going and you'll find several little lakes. And if you're feeling really energetic you can hike all the way to Heceta Head Lighthouse. Alder/Dune campground is a quiet little USFS campground on two lakes in between these two spots. Bring your fishing pole.
