Hello Oregon. 150 years old. 50 years ago I was ten years old, raised in LaGrande, in Eastern Oregon. We “girls” all made and dressed up in Centenial dresses, and had a wonderful time with parades, etc. I still have that dress. The High School Home Economics girls made it for me. My Mother being a High School teacher at the time.

My Husband was also 10, raised in the Medford area, and his horse riding club was part of the pony express that “ran” from border to border (from North to South) for the occassion. What fun for him – old enough to “ride” and remember. We have the pony express saddle bags that were used for that area’s run hanging in our home entry way right now. Beautiful, but “used” leather saddle bags – stamped “U.S.” on them. Just thought you’d like to know this. Sure doesn’t seem 50 years ago. Thanks for the memories.

I’m very excitedly looking forward to the last two weeks in April when I’ll be vacationing along the southern pacific coastline! Can’t wait to bask in that fabulous beauty I keep hearing about!!!

It’s fun getting the newsletters. But, the recipe section really needs pictures of the dishes to help us visualize and salivate over all the great recipes.

My husband and I will be visiting family in Eugene this June. It will be our first visit. We are English and live in the south of England and my Oregon cousins’ ancestors left our village in the 1800’s for an unknown life in the New World, after marrying in our parish church here. We found each other again in 2001 after a genealogy search by my daughter. When my new found cousins visited us, we stood in our village church and re-lived the story; it was very emotional. Five years ago we were invited to share Thanksgiving with them when they lived in California for a short while, and found ourselves sitting among many of our hitherto unknown family. What an event that was. Everyone shared the cooking; the table looked beautiful laid with china from England called ‘Country Roses.’ But my cousin is now back in her beloved Oregon, hence our upcoming visit. I find your newsletters fascinating and educational, and only wish we could spend more than two weeks in your beautiful state – so much to see, so little time to see it. I’m sure we will come back again and again. Thank you.

Had a wonderful time on the Coast in mid-January while the mercury hit -40 F here in Wisconsin. It was fabulous to walk on green grass wearing just light clothing! Wish we could visit more often!

Enjoy the Southern Oregon Coast, Kay! One of the lesser known beaches is Miners Creek (it’s really exceptionally scenic), about 15 mi. south of Gold Beach. It’s a little bit of a hike down to it. There’s some parking (no fancy lot) but only a little signage. A great Oregon Parks camping spot is Humbug Mtn. S.P., about 6 mi. south of Port Orford.

An Oregon native who had to leave the state during the Korean War, I finally got back in 1984 and am looking forward to the 150 years anniversary celebrations this year. And, Oh! I’ll never leave again.

Oregon is the best of America. I’m from Missouri and have traveled extensively the last forty years and nowhere’s better than Oregon. Your state is magnificent in every way. The beauty of Oregon is breath-taking, the people are a joy and the progressive political attitudes are a model to follow. Happy birthday Oregon, you’re luckier than you know!
