What's Going On In Oregon This January?
January 2, 2008
What’s your resolution this year? We have some fun Oregon ideas to help you stick to it – whether it’s getting fit (take a climbing class, or train for Cycle Oregon) or spending more time with your family at one of our snowy resorts.
We’ve got more goodies this month, too, including an Oregon Trail-inspired recipe from a new restaurant in Central Oregon, and a number of fabulous winter events such as the Portland Jazz Festival.
See you in Oregon, where we’re watching The Goonies.

How is the snow up on Mt Hood? We want to go boarding up there soon.

Wonderous Winter in Store?
Ok, I have skied more at this point in the season in years past. It was my job for a long time. Or, I should say I was on the slopes more days at this point. But, when I heard the prognostications from state Climatologist George Tayler back in the fall say it was going to be a mild la nina, good snow year. I started making my plans. Well after a late start all I can say is WOW! Four ski days into the season and they have all been at least 9.0. Oh, that doesn't count a week in the Canadian Rockies earlier in December.
Last weekend at Willamette Pass? As good as it gets without a chopper and a major hit to your platinum Visa card. I had over 15,000 feet in before stopping for a beer and homefries well before noon. Beat the lunch crowd and back out into the wonderland of Willamette Pass. Still finding untracked pockets past 2:00pm.
Can it get any better than this? Just wait and see. The best part about Willamette is, well two things...steep runs, and big trees. Even if the storm is raging you can find comfortable skiing in the trees. Their new Six Pack transports you to the top of Eagle Peak in a flash. No more hanging by white knuckles wishing there were still trees at the top of the landing of your favorite lift elsewhere.
Anyway...we are blessed. Keep working on your cardio, keep an ear out on your radio. Small craft warning on the coast. Highs in the 40's in town. That will likely mean good powder. Stuff they dream of even in Summit County, CO.
Ski Oregon - lucky dogs we are.
